I've seen some customers who take out the roasted cutlet set meal, but I think they can probably take it out with the sauce cutlet bowl.
Extremely rude staff with an old matriarch running the show.. She doesn't allow children to eat there. And told us she will not serve us if we have children eating with us. I couldn't believe my ears, and had another Japanese speaking patron verify this. He did, and was apologetic and said he doesn't know why she is refusing entry. On second thoughts, we are all of South Asian descent, and I am not sure if she profiled us and denied service. Either ways, descent or kids should be acceptable at all places of business.
Honestly one of the best tonkatsu I have ever eaten in my life.
It's a compact restaurant, so please consider any inconvenience it would cause to rest customers and vendor before asking for exchanging your seat.
It is a small place but the food was delicious and the owners (I assume), an old couple, were very friendly and polite. They had an English menu with pictures for the tourists and it turned out the meals were very big
Strongly recommend NOT to dine in this restaurant. There is no respect to foreigners... Extremely bad attitude.
Only 5 seats in this awesome kontatsu restaurant. Because of the limited sitting, you may not be able to sit together with rest of your party. There is a picture menu so handy for foreigners. Probably one of the most delicious cut off pork loin I ever had. Cue can be excruciatingly slow so arrive too hungry or show up early.
So freaking rude. I heard this place was rude but experiencing it first hand is on another level. Please dont go to this place. I am gutted I cannot give below one star.
Nice place, nice food!! Roast pork nice 👍👍
Delicious food, Although service not very kindly. But I can accept service attitude .Very suggest source with pork.
Food was fantastic, the owner was quite blunt. But the food made up for it.
This place specialises in katsu. Food was good, it's a leaner cut of pork for the tonkatsu but it was not tough or dry. The curry was nice with yummy morsels of beef. Price is reasonable for the portion (paid 1100 yen for this). Service and atmosphere are decent. Only counter seats available. English menu is available if you ask, although I noticed that there are combination sets that are not in the English menu.
Arrogant owner
My biggest regret? That I let the reviews about bad service convince me to avoid this place for a couple of days. Went in today towards the end of service. Place was peaceful and not too crowded. The owners were kind and welcoming, patient with our stilted attempt at Japanese and quick to prepare the meals. The food - tonkatsu meal set and mince meal set - was absolutely delicious. Some of the juiciest katsu I’ve had, with plenty of delicious and generously portioned sides. The griddled aubergine with ginger was a stand-out. Would love to eat here again.
Tonkatsu is great !! English menu is available. But the owner is not friendly, you are not permitted to take any photo here. If you can ignore the service, let's try.
After reading the reviews we were a bit wary to go on because of the alleged bad service. Walked in to find a very warm welcome instead, and on top of this the best food we've eaten in our four days in Nikko. Both the tonkatsu and the minced meat schnitzel are highly recommended.
so good
Food is great and the owner doesn't like to take photo so dont event try then you will be ok
It was the second group from the end for about 2 hours in line with Nikko Drive on the weekend after the removal of self-restraint outside the prefecture.Since it is a private store, it seems like a ticket stop if the line is cut off due to the feeling of a manager. The shop has only 6 counter seats. The aim is a pork fin cutlet set meal. The fin cutlet set meal is 6 pieces, and each one is thick and slightly medium rare feeling remains, but since it is fried after ordering, the clothes were crispy and juicy.Rice served up to once by courtesy of the shop.It is a conscientious shop that you want to visit again if you go nearby.
The staff was really bad attitude for foreigners.I recommend you shouldn't go if you're foreign tourists. You must be going to get terrible feeling. In fact, the foreign guest who waited for more than 1 hrs in front of me couldn't enter inside because the staff said "I don't like foreigners!"What a terrible discrimination!I was really astonished and felt worst.I'm a Japanese, and I really feel sorry for the tourists.I tried to persuade the staff, but she just shouted dirty words. She is old lady and her thinking way is really old-fashioned.I couldn't believe what happened, and I couldn't enjoy my meal. You can eat more delicious Japanese food everywhere.Plz don't go there if you don't wanna hate Japan.
Denied entry at 6:28 p.m. after waiting for 20 minutes in line Even though they close at 7:00 p.m. and had chairs clearing.Don't bother waiting if you're showing up after 6:00 p.m.
So I just want to add to the multitude of opinions and reviews. Yes they are all true:Owners perhaps aren’t fluent in English, hence their possible aversion to tourists.A pictorial English Menu exists. The place has 6 seats and shuts at 6pm, not 7pm.Food is amazing. The 1500yen set meal will 6 pieces of pork tenderloin is superb value. Their eggplant sidedish is out of this world. Yes, service is not typical Japanese service (that is they are not the most polite and welcoming), but the food and lake view more than makes up for it. DO NOT ALLOW the fear of bad service prevent you from visiting this place. IT REALLY IS THAT GOOD!!!!
This is my fifth visit.Although there are some people who say that their attitude is bad in the word of mouth, I have not been dissatisfied with customer service as much as I sit and eat normally. Rather, it's a work-oriented shop and I like it.You can get angry when you talk or take a picture without pushing your chopsticks. But it seems to be a consideration for the shop outside the line. The fin cutlet set meal of 1500 yen is recommended. The meat is tender and the volume is perfect.
Meat shop owner next door runs the restaurant that the quality is never compromised, at least I assumed. However, there has been a rumour that the owner does not like foreigners. My personal feeling is the Wife of the owner dislikes foreigners because she is the one hosting, such as taking orders and communicating with clients, etc. English menu is available with pictures.
The food is amazing. Don’t be turned off by the reviews saying the staff is rude. You may not get to sit with your party. Get in when a seat is available, and if needed, ask for a picture menu and point at what you’d like to order.
Not friendly to children
Actually closes at 6pm - be careful, there is no where open for dinner in this town (in winter). Owner was very rude.
It was lined up from 11:45 and entered the store with 6 seats at 13:20.After ordering from there, it was 14:20 when we finished the payment and went out of the store.I ate a sauce cutlet bowl and it was delicious with plenty of 5 pieces of tenderloin.
No photo! Worth waiting in line for Tonkatsu.
Delicious pork cutlet with a large volume for the price! Is good, but the clerkStanding right in front of the counterWait too long to finish eating? !!I felt like I was watching it, and I didn't feel calm because I had to eat quietly and quickly.
Do not accept foreign people.
wow, it doesn't matter how good your food is without manners. The old lady didn't even bother to acknowledge us in line, spoke only to a few people ahead and put the closed sign right in front of us without any verification or explanation that she was closing...unbelievable gall, even for Japanese standards. If this persists, she shouldn't receive any praise for poor social skills and common decency as a restaurant owner. How hard is it to face a family with a hungry baby and say "I'm sorry but we are closing now”.....?
